Tipping customs vary widely by country. In the United States, 15–20% is customary at sit-down restaurants, with 18% a common middle ground. In much of Europe a service charge is often included, and smaller tips (or simply rounding up) are the norm.
How it's calculated
Tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100); Total = bill + tip; Per person = total ÷ people
The tip is a straight percentage of the bill. When splitting, both the tip and the bill are divided evenly among the group.
Worked example
A $86.40 dinner bill with an 18% tip: the tip is $15.55 and the total is $101.95. Split between 4 people, each pays $25.49.

›Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides generally say the pre-tax amount is sufficient, though many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small: on a $100 bill with 8% tax, tipping 18% post-tax adds about $1.44.
›How much should I tip in the US?
Common guidance: 15–20% at restaurants, $1–2 per drink at bars, 10–15% for delivery (with a reasonable minimum), and 15–20% for taxis and rideshares.
›What if service was poor?
You can tip less, but consider speaking with a manager instead. In the US, servers are often paid below minimum wage on the assumption that tips make up the difference.
›Is it rude to split a bill unevenly?
Not at all. Many groups pay for what they ordered. The even split this calculator does is simply the fastest option when orders are similar.
