Celsius and Fahrenheit are offset scales, which is why the conversion needs both a multiplication and an addition. Forgetting the addition is the single most common temperature conversion mistake. Kelvin is simply Celsius shifted so that zero sits at absolute zero, the coldest temperature physically possible.
How it's calculated
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32 · °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 · K = °C + 273.15
The 9/5 factor reflects that a Fahrenheit degree is smaller than a Celsius degree (180 °F between freezing and boiling versus 100 °C), and the +32 offset aligns the freezing point of water.
Worked example
A 22 °C spring day is 22 × 9/5 + 32 = 71.6 °F. A 350 °F oven is (350 − 32) × 5/9 ≈ 177 °C. Normal body temperature, 37 °C, is 98.6 °F or 310.15 K.

›What are the key reference temperatures?
Water freezes at 0 °C / 32 °F and boils at 100 °C / 212 °F (at sea level). Body temperature is about 37 °C / 98.6 °F. Room temperature is roughly 20–22 °C / 68–72 °F. The scales cross at −40°, where both read the same.
›Is there a quick mental conversion?
For rough weather numbers: double the Celsius value and add 30 (22 °C → ~74 °F; exact: 71.6). Going the other way, subtract 30 and halve. It is accurate to within a few degrees in the everyday range.
›What is Kelvin used for?
Kelvin is the SI unit of temperature, used in science because it starts at absolute zero (−273.15 °C), the point where molecular motion is minimal. Kelvin has no negative values and no degree symbol.
›What are common oven temperature equivalents?
325 °F ≈ 165 °C, 350 °F ≈ 175 °C, 375 °F ≈ 190 °C, 400 °F ≈ 200 °C, 425 °F ≈ 220 °C, 450 °F ≈ 230 °C. Fan (convection) ovens typically need about 20 °C less.
