70 kg in lb
154.323584 lb

The pound and kilogram boundary is the one most people need: body weight, gym plates, luggage allowances, and package pricing frequently cross it. Stone, still standard for body weight in the UK and Ireland, is included too, since 175 lb and 12 st 7 lb are the same weight expressed two ways.

How it's calculated

1 lb = 0.45359237 kg (exact) · 1 st = 14 lb · 1 oz = 1/16 lb

All conversions pass through kilograms as the base unit. The pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg since 1959, so the factors are exact; results are rounded only for display.

Worked example

A 70 kg person weighs 70 ÷ 0.45359 = 154.3 lb, or 11 st 0.3 lb. A 23 kg airline luggage limit is 50.7 lb. A 4 oz burger patty is 113 g.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds is a kilogram?

1 kg ≈ 2.2046 lb. The quick mental rule of doubling and adding 10% gets you very close: 80 kg becomes 160 + 16 = 176 lb (exact: 176.4).

What is a stone?

A British unit equal to 14 pounds (6.35 kg), still commonly used for body weight in the UK and Ireland. A person weighing 11 stone weighs 154 lb or 69.9 kg.

Are weight and mass the same thing?

Technically no. Mass is the amount of matter and weight is the force of gravity on it. In everyday usage on Earth the terms are interchangeable, and scales are calibrated accordingly.

How do I convert ounces for recipes?

1 oz = 28.35 g, so an 8 oz ingredient is about 227 g. Note that fluid ounces measure volume, not weight; for liquids, use a volume conversion instead.
